PLASTIC BOTTLE LIFESAVER
"UKUCCHA Bottle“
WAKAMATSU
Coast Guard Office established floats made of plastic bottles
as substitute survival kits on eight places within the jurisdiction such as
lighthouses on capes. It is nicknamed “UKUCCHA Bottle” and shall be used
in case where fishermen fall into the sea by accident.
“UKUCCHA Bottle” is
established at piers and breakwater lights on rocky
shores such as the pier at the entrance of DOKAIWAN, WAITA fishing
port, KASHIWABARA fishing port and MYOKENSAKI where many fishermen
visit. It is made by hands of the WAKAMATSU Coast Guard Office’s
staffs with ingenious ideas so that discoverers can detach it from the door
of a lighthouse easily and throw it to the person drowning for the safe
rescue in case that a fisherman falls into the sea.
The purpose of this
activity is also to spread the idea of using accessible
materials such as plastic bottles effectively for lifesaving to the citizens.
It is expected that this activity will spread to the companies administrating
facilities at piers, coasts and rivers as well as to the local people
and survival kits or substitute survival kits will be established at many
places where there is a possibility of accidents and support lifesavings.
The detail of this matter including how to make is also introduced
on the website of our department “Dokai Hibiki Net (http://www.kaiho.mlit.go.jp/07kanku/wakamatsu/)”.
However, “UKUCCHA
Bottle” could be used only for emergency therefore the most important
point for a self-lifesaving is to follow three basics;
1) wear a lifejacket, 2) keep communication tools such as mobile phones
and 3) call “118” for the maritime urgent message.
